Lara Croft: The Debate

  • I've taken the liberty to bring up a common issue in the Tomb Raider franchise. Let's ask a typical male what he thinks of when he hears 'Lara Croft' or 'Tomb Raider'. Most of the time, they'll say something sexual. This aggravates me to the end of the world. It's common on YouTube, under almost any video regarding Tomb Raider.

The fact that throughout the years, Lara's appearance and clothing has been a bit risqué, has not helped quell the cause's fire. Men, (and this may seem ironic, considering I'm a teenage guy), can't seem to appreciate Lara nowadays for anything more than sexual reasons. What about the fact that she shows a dominant stance as a woman? What about the fact that she proves herself to be a strong woman, perhaps stronger than any man, physically and emotionally? What about the idea that she's the best hero of all time?

Lara Croft is one of my idols, for obvious reasons. She's an amazing woman - she's beautiful, talented, smart, and witty. Now, I'm not going to wag fingers, but it would help if her breasts weren't abnormally large, even though it's what a man would call her "trademark", :stupid .

I've created this thread to debate over the male mind, and how ridiculous people are nowadays in which they are so consumed by a sex crave that they can't appreciate what's right in front of them for normal reasons.

It's people like this who make people like me need medication.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. :thumbsup

Funnily, I've been to a meeting of Tomb Raider Fans two weeks ago and this group mainly consists of females or males who are either gay or couldn't care less about Lara's bra-size, because they are very down to earth and get the concept called reality. ;-) That's my view of the Tomb Raider community, all normal, not at all overexcited about Lara's physical appearance. A really nice bunch of people, who do not deserve to be frowned upon by people who only have heard of Lara Croft in combination with her "hotness".

  • You're reading my mind Cat - that post may as well have been written by me ;-)
I think it is extremely exasperating that everyone whom I tell that I play Tomb Raider instantly says something like "That's not a game, it's a softporno". Honestly, I don't buy a game because the heroine has bra size D - I buy it because it is a good game with a good storyline. All those nude patches are about as sick as anything can be. But, alas, it seems that the old rule of "sex sells" still is alive and well, and that it is used, too. Did anyone see pictures of Ivy in her 1p costume as she will appear in Soul Calibur 4? That's not to be called sane anymore. Computer game heroines are often over-sexualised, which is a shame and a disgrace and shows how primitive some people are. Unfortunately, I doubt that will change anytime soon. But we should always bear in mind that people who comment on Lara like that thereby reveal what the first thing they think about when they see Lara is [hehe]

  • I'm not too overexited about her breasts, either.

But I think her being female is an important fact why so many women like her: just because they can identify easily with her, easier than with some male hero like Indy or Drake. My fascination with her began when I realised that there was finally an intelligent female heroine.

Oh well, I'm stating the obvious again [hehe]

  • Precisely (all three of you), ! I remember in 7th or 8th grade, I was talking to my cousin about Legend, and how excited I was to get it. Our friend who was with us, listening upon our conversation aggravated me. I said "I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider game. It looks awesome."

He replies, "Yeah, I can't imagine why.", and rolls his eyes. If anyone were to have the right to roll their eyes at that statement, it should darn well be me.

It's really a shame that nowadays, the mind of male gamers is clogged by sexual intentions that they can't see the truth behind anything. It's pathetic.

  • I agree, tomb raider has always been considered a bit pervey! and most people would like it that way :), but ive always enjoyed tomb raider cause the games and films are fun and its like a female indiana jones :)

  • Now that's one thing I would never do: compare Tomb Raider to anything similar. One, I hate Indiana Jones; two, Tomb Raider is completely original and is only related to Indiana Jones because they share similar ideas (raiding tombs).

That's just me though. I wouldn't compare it, but everyone can do what they please, :D .

  • I thought I could take part in this debate too...
I have never actually cared about the size of Lara Croft's bosom. I like the Tomb Raider games, because they've got a female hero, who doesn't just sit around and sceam for help. She does the things her own way, which often involves guns, explosions and defeating bad guys. And the games have a very large enviroment, and it's fun to explore it, and find the secrets and hidden relics. :D

  • When I purchased my first Tombraider game I couldn't care less about her cup size. :-)
I bought it because of the large environment and the brilliant gameplay and puzzles. It also has been one of the first true 3 D games.
Prince of Persia was the other option but someone told me how awesome Tombraider is and I stuck with it ever since. :awe
Playing every game on PC ( including add-on's ) I've seen her grow up ( so to speak ). And with every improvement in pixelation she seemed to grow in cup size. Which in my eyes did NOT make her look better. She looked very out of proportion. Almost scary, mutant style.
It didn't deter me from playing it though.
With the new generation of Lara thanks to CD she became a lot more life-like, visually. But I must refer to " masterofdisaster " who points at games like Soul Calibur and the like, that Lara is not a mindless female which only serves as " eye candy " but is the main character of the series and therefore earns a bit more respect as such. :shout

  • I saw a then and now picture and the renders from TR:LR and TR:C, Lara's breasts look extremely disproportionate. It's like they focused on size and took logic out of the equation - "Let's make them huge and not care if they look like cucumbers!".

    :stupid

  • I actually thought they looked like Madonna's cone-bra's. :rofl But you are right, she looked quite top-heavy. But what about the size and shape of her head? Square and rather large, don't you agree ?
But back to her breasts. Wouldn't they get in her way with all that climbing, shimmying and rope swinging? Not to mention hand to hand combat and melees. :rope:
    I feel sorry for her.

  • Forgot to post this. I noticed in Underworld that when you unholster your dual pistols and take aim, Lara's rear tightens. I know it's realistic and interesting how they did that, but no. On top of that, when she runs and comes to a complete stop, like in Legend (but not as noticeable) her breasts jiggle.

    :stupid

I know the game is realistic in motion capture, and I appreciate the realism, but I hope the womanizers of the world don't notice this.

  • but I hope the womanizers of the world don't notice this.

well, they do now, since you mentioned it. [hehe]
As a tombraider fan I think I focus more on the game than on the way Lara's boobs jiggle or her rear moves. :-)
But I do appreciate the way they're trying to make Lara more life-like. I especially like the idea of Lara getting dirty when she splashes through mud or runs through the jungle.
BTW, what do you think is Lara's most revealing outfit? I think it is the evening dress in Legend ( Japan level ) :-)

  • I'd say so since you can pretty much see her underwear and her breasts, but I think the bikini outfits in Legend and the swimsuit in Underworld.

  • I must admit the swimsuit is pretty brief. But if you go to the beaches here you see even smaller outfits. Which really is just one step away from nudity. Ridiculous actually.

BTW, you're up late :D Cat.

  • You see smaller outfits in my school nevermind the beach. Up late? It's only 8:32pm - I normally call it a night around 9pm Sunday through Thursday.

I asked a few friends from school for their opinion on Lara Croft and even they said her breasts were too big and the people who design her must be perverted. Two out of five were guys, :applaud !

See, not all guys are into big boobs. :-) How boring would it be if we all had the same preferences when it comes to looks. :roll
BTW, when I said you are up late I just looked at the time of your post, not realizing that the time ( of your post ) was in european time , not US. Shame on me. But why do you call it a night at 9 pm? Isn't that a bit early, or do you have early starts in the morning?
BTW, what does the line say under your name? :sun:
